Wellness Practices for Teen Substance Abuse

Recovery isn’t just about ending your teen’s addiction. It’s about healing in mind, body and spirit.

What Is Wellness?

Wellness represents the opposite of addiction: healing, balance, and mindfulness. At Safe Landing, we understand your child is more than an assortment of symptoms. And while the treatment of addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions in teens remains vital to their wellbeing, we’re also committed to helping them grow stronger, healthier, and more complete. The tools they’ll learn at Safe Landing can serve them throughout recovery — for a lifetime of wellness.

Healthy Food for a Healthy Lifestyle

Many teens struggle to get the nutrition they need to grow — and it’s especially challenging when they’ve been actively addicted. The harmful substances inhibit the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Plus, the addiction itself usually takes precedence over the need to eat.

That’s why Safe Landing provides three healthy catered meals each day, along with unlimited snacking options. We can also help with intuitive eating for a healthy relationship with food. And if your child has any dietary restrictions or preferences, just let us know. We’re happy to make any accommodations necessary!

Fitness, Exercise and More

Exercise is a powerful way for your teen to use the extra energy they’ll feel in recovery. Plus, it can boost their mood and reduce any cravings they feel. Fitness is fun at Safe Landing, with an on-site basketball court and soccer field. Our certified fitness trainer is available twice a week as well. And there are plenty of ways to get moving indoors as well, with a ping-pong table and Xbox.

Mindfulness Curriculum

As part of our holistic approach to teen addiction treatment, our mindfulness curriculum teaches teens clients a way of reducing cravings and remaining in the present moment. Yoga and daily meditation keep clients moving and active, while intuitive eating and horticulture therapy teaches valuable lessons about proper nutrition.

Animal-Assisted Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy has been proven effective in helping clients in addiction recovery, providing a sense of calm, comfort, and safety. Pet therapy with dogs is especially useful for adolescent substance abuse treatment as a means of diverting attention and reducing stress and anxiety. Our hypo-allergenic certified therapy dog, Mantequilla, is on-site five days a week to help clients open up and fully receive the benefits of therapy.
